An app usually costs more than a website, and the price depends almost entirely on what it has to do. Here's what actually drives the cost, the running costs to plan for, and how to start smaller without throwing money away.
What drives the price
Two apps that look alike can cost very different amounts. These are the things that move the number:
- Features — logins, bookings, payments, chat, maps and notifications are each real work.
- The backend and admin dashboard — most apps need a control room for your team, not just the screens customers see.
- Platforms — iOS and Android. A cross-platform build covers both from one codebase instead of paying twice.
- Integrations — connecting to your existing systems, payment providers or delivery partners.
- Design — custom screens and flows built around your customers, versus a generic layout.
- Launch — testing on real phones and getting through App Store and Google Play review.
The running costs to plan for
An app isn't a one-time cost. Apple charges developers a yearly fee to stay on the App Store, and Google charges a one-time fee for Google Play. On top of that come hosting for the backend, and updates when new iOS and Android versions change things. A good quote lays these out before you start.
How to start smaller
You don't have to build everything at once. Start with the one thing customers need most, launch it, and add the rest once people use it. And if your customers only visit you once in a while, a website or web app may be the better first step: it works on every phone with no download, and usually costs less.
